Meet Xichen Nie, PhD
Scientific Manager
Can you share a bit about your background and what led you to join Paterna BioSciences?
I hold a BS in life sciences from Sun Yat-sen University in China and a PhD in oncological sciences from the University of Utah. My graduate work, under the mentorship of Drs. Bradley Cairns and Jingtao Guo, focused on human male reproductive biology. I specialized in single-cell genomics, germline stem cell biology, and testicular development.
Before joining Paterna, I was deeply involved in the related fundamental research, aiming to translate it into clinical applications. I enjoy working with Brad, Jingtao and Jim, the co-founders of Paterna, and I also love the life in Salt Lake City, Utah. Paterna’s mission aligns perfectly with my goals, and with the people and location being such a good fit, it was natural for me to join and continue pursuing my passion.
What is your role at Paterna, and how does your work contribute to the mission of solving male infertility?
I currently serve as the Scientific Manager at Paterna, leading a science team dedicated to developing pioneering technologies for human in vitro spermatogenesis.
What aspect of working in the field of reproductive health are you most passionate about?
In vitro gametogenesis.
Its implementation can help numerous families fulfill their dream of having children, mitigating the multiple rounds of physical strain on women often associated with traditional in vitro fertilization (IVF) and reducing the risk of genetic diseases in offspring. Additionally, it should present a more financially viable option.
What drives you to innovate in the area of male fertility?
The potential to make a meaningful impact on families who are facing challenges in conceiving.
Why is fertility and the treatment of infertility so important to you?
Because it can impact the happiness and well-being of many people and families around the world.
Do you have any published papers or other materials that Paterna could share to highlight your expertise?
Please explore our science publications from many of our team members!

How does collaboration within the team contribute to the success of Paterna?
The nature of Paterna’s work requires diverse expertise and creative solutions through collaboration. Establishing the in vitro spermatogenesis pipeline in our R&D lab demands expertise in molecular biology, cell biology, genomics, genetic backgrounds, and AI technology. Paterna’s success hinges on effective communication and shared goals among every team member.
What’s unique about the culture at Paterna that differentiates it from other places you’ve worked?
We live in a very innovative work environment with collaboration among the team. Also, Paterna’s focus on families, which guides our research and development, ensuring our work makes a real difference.
What impact do you hope your work will have in the community?
Improve the lives of individuals and couples struggling with infertility.
Where do you see the future of fertility treatments going, and how is Paterna positioning itself to lead that change?
Establishing in vitro oogenesis platform to treat female factor related infertility; Utilizing artificial intelligence and high-throughput data analysis techniques to enhance infertility diagnostics and optimize gamete selection for IVF; and adding fertility diagnosis and preservation as routine physical examination options, aiming for early detection and intervention.
What do you enjoy doing outside of ‘the office’?
I enjoy working out and gardening.
Share a ‘fun fact’ about yourself!
As a kid, I loved climbing trees and was always the one who reached the highest among my friends. However, as I got older, I developed acrophobia.
If you were describing your job to a five-year-old, what would you say you do at work?
I’m working with my friends to find a special way to help parents who want to have babies but are having trouble.
